Now you know why they call it "O.K. City!"
We got this email the other day that was sent to Ed Spears, acting executive director of the non-profit CMPA. We thought you'd enjoy this confidence builder:

Ed,
Kudos to whoever selected the Oklahoma City article for the newsletter. Although I haven’t traveled there in several years, I could tell from the level of building and downtown activity, that it was going to be a great project. The centerpiece was Bricktown Ball Park and the renovation of the warehouses in that area. Looks like developers stepped in and turned them into condos; which certainly could be done on a larger scale in Pensacola as the CMP construction starts. We need to keep the energy going! Thanks for being involved and committed.

If Oklahoma City can do it - we can do it. It begins downtown.

Meet Micah Baldwin (MBaldwin Photography) - The Official Friends of the Community Maritime Park Photographer!
Coming from a family background of artists and musicians, Micah Baldwin realized that it was the lens of a camera that was to be her choice of medium to help set her apart and establish her own creative mark.
With family and friends often the subjects of her earlier studies, she is always on the hunt for locations of backgrounds to compliment the union. Her training in art helped transpose the important elements of natural design and composition into her images.
Comfortable in a world of black and white, she has a subtle skill to cut through the confusion of color helping to let us focus on the intensity or purity of her subject. However when addressing color, you can tell that when it is there, it is definitely there for a reason to be reckoned with.
Micah acknowledges and appreciates the many brilliant and ground-breaking women who have leveled and continue to expand the ever-creative playing field in this young and powerful new art form of photography.
If you have a vision, she will collaborate with you and come up with something to suit your needs and make your vision come to life!

UPDATE: Friends in the process of organizing as an "open books" non-profit corporation
Next Tuesday, the initial Board of Trustees for Friends of the Community Maritime Park will meet with a member of the Saltmarsh accounting firm to put together all the elements needed for our filing for an IRS designated non-profit corporation, also known as a 501c3 non-profit corporation.
It had been our hope to have this completed by the end of January, but we were informed there is a 6 - 8 week time lag to get the IRS designation. What that means to Friends is that our plans for a volunteer clean-up of the CMP property will most likely occur in March.
Why are we incorporating?
This opens up a wide variety of opportunities for Friends. It will allow us to receive tax-deductible contributions. It will allow us to operate Community Maritime Park focused retailing, the way that The Friends of the (New York City) Metropolitan Museum of Fine Art runs the Museum shop to raise money for museum projects.
In the interests of following the example set by the non-profit Community Maritime Park Associates (non-profit CMPA), Friends will operate as an "open books" non-profit. What that means to you is that the Friends financial records will be open for public inspection just as are the records of the non-profit CMPA.
Twenty-five percent of Friends' net revenues will be donated directly to the non-profit CMPA. The other 75 percent will be used for public amenities, educational projects, and other public park-related investments.
Friends wants to thank Kathlyn White, an attorney with the firm of Mc Donald Fleming, Morehead and a sitting member of the non-profit CMPA Board of Trustees for donating her time to create the By-Laws and other legal documents involved with this organization.
Friends also wants to thank the following who will sit as the initial Board of Trustees for Friends:
Glenn C. Obert, owner of Webfoot Enterprises, Chair
Kenneth E. Lamb, owner of CyberSmart Computers and Networking, Vice Chair
Ellen C. Hoefer, assistant city banking manager with Peoples First Community Bank, Secretary/Treasurer
Kathlyn White, Board member, corporate registered agent, and legal counsel
Mike Bates, owner of WEBY AM-1330, Board member

Friends looking for a home
Friends is looking for a property to set up as its offices. We'd prefer a downtown street-front so that we can garner the visibility that comes with that type of location. We will also needs access into the evening hours so that working Friends can participate in volunteer projects when they get off their job.
Friends will be more than happy to accept shared arrangements with another business. So if you have excess square footage, then we would love to talk with you about that arrangement as well.
In the short run - 3 - 6 months, Friends will need a rent-deferred arrangement until we are incorporated as a non-profit and have some donations in the treasury.
Like any other non-profit civic organization, Friends survives on the generosity of its supporters. If you have a property available, or know of one, please contact Glenn C. Obert at this email address:

Draft minutes of the December non-profit CMPA meeting
A meeting was held on Friday, December 14, 2007 of the Board of Trustees of Community Maritime Park Associates, Inc. Present at the meeting were board members Mr. Lacey A. Collier, Chairman, Mr. Richard Baker, Ms. Kathlyn White, Reverend Hugh King, Ms. Juanita Scott, Dr. Jimmy Jones, Mr. Rodney Jackson, Mr. John Merting and Mr. Eddie Todd. Edward Spears from the City of Pensacola was also present.
The meeting was properly noticed and open to the public.
These minutes are a synopsis of the actions taken at that meeting and are not intended as verbatim minutes.
The meeting was called to order at 1:05 p.m. by Chairman Collier. The agenda was followed as presented:
I. Chairman Collier reported on the City Council action that approved the transfer ability of the 2008 Budget and Site Plans. He also reported on the meeting with Port Royal and discussed the request to add a deed restriction to limit any future fill on the eastern side of the property.
II. Mr. Merting moved to approve the minutes from the previous meeting and Mr. King seconded the motion. The minutes were approved unanimously.
III. Kenneth Lamb and Glenn Obert from Friends of the Maritime Park gave a presentation to the Board. They requested authorization to create a “friends” organization to assist with project promotion. Discussion followed. Mr. Merting moved to endorse the “friends” organization and it passed unanimously. They were asked to give a report on the progress during the January meeting. Mr. Merting advised that UWF has cross-linked the “friends” website at the Maritime Museum website.
IV. Mr. King requested to move Contractor Academy up in the agenda to allow guests to make presentation. Mr. Phinis Jones, Ms. LaRuby Way and Ms. Monica Ray from Capital Services Management gave a presentation to the Board. They presented a proposal to assist with the Covenant with the Community. Darnell Sims discussed the relationship between Capital Services Management and the Gulf Coast African American Chamber of Commerce. Discussion followed.
V. Mr. Merting noted for the record that he submitted comments about the RFP and they were distributed at the open meeting and not e-mailed. Mr. Jackson feels the deposit required to submit a response to the RFP is low. Each trustee will have a ten day window to give comments for inclusion. Mr. Todd requested the process to submit comments go through Ed Spears and then forwarded to Mr. Owen Beitsch of Real Estate Research. It was requested that Mr. Spears circulate all comments received. Ms. White requested we check all dates for consistency. Mr. Jones asked if Covenant with Community would be included. Chairman Collier advised that we need to engage Mr. Beitsch for continued services. This will be on the agenda in January. Board was instructed to not receive anonymous comments but to solicit via e-mail and on website. The Board will be notified of the workshop date as soon as possible. Chairman Collier noted that the financial report is at each member’s places.
VI. Meeting was adjourned at 3:00 p.m.
Respectfully submitted, Ms. Juanita Scott, Secretary
