Subject: We Want Our CMP!
Councilman Hall, I am writing both as a resident of the City of Pensacola and Escambia County, and as a Residential Relocation Specialist, Broker Associate with Coldwell Banker United, REALTORS. After relocating here almost 8 years ago I can tell you that I am still absolutely in awe of this City. It has such potential. I enjoy the leisurely life style and pace of our area and the accessibility of the Arts, the Beaches and outdoor activities. What concerns and saddens me is the apparent inability of our leadership to firmly commit to an investment in our community and its growth. As an independent contractor and owner of my own business I am well aware of the investment needed to grow a business and the need for timely assessment and decision making.
As a Sales Manager for Coldwell Banker United, REALTORS I listen to the wants, needs and desires of the Sales Agents who work out of my office and those of their clients. As a working Broker Associate I listen to the wants, needs and desires of my clients and those of my Company Relocation Department and our Corporate Clients, entrusted in my care to act as an Ambassador for our area. Our potential residents and business investors are pleased with the overall tour of our area; and, surprised, puzzled and disappointed by the condition and lack of activity and investment in our downtown area. They are impressed with the vision and opportunities presented by the anticipated development of our waterfront and surprised that nothing has been done prior to this time to invest in and develop the area.
When touring potential investors and prospective business clients their top concern is whether our City and Community will be able to meet the needs of their business and employees if they apparently care not about their core asset – the City. How many studies have to be made with the same results? A vital, living, active Community Maritime Park will breath new life into our City and the surrounding area increasing revenue to sustain and grow our Community and providing a much needed core activity and gathering area representative of our cultural and historic past and our future. The Park will be a big, bold statement setting the standard.
I understand operating budgets, employee needs, core improvements, budgets, and expenses. I am definitely in a business that sees it’s ups and downs in the market. I also know that our City is a business and needs to make and take a proactive position in development and investment in itself. I urge you to see that an investment is made to move the Community Maritime Park and all its facilities forward as quickly as possible. No decision, or one to yet again reevaluate or further explore possibilities is, in fact, a decision. It is far better to make a decision that you need to improve on or make adjustment to than to make no decision at all.
Are you, as a member of the Council and as a resident, going to take the lead and be a proponent of planned growth laying a firm foundation for future growth and investment in our City and it’s waterfront? Or, are you going to let growth, or the lack of it, control our Community? One thing is certain – we either control “Growth,” or it will control us. I urge you and your fellow Council Members to consider the message you are sending current and potential investors, businesses, and residents of our Community with your decision. We need a firm, committed lead.
